GODWIN, NANSEMOND FARMER, DIES Chuckatuck, Dec. 2 - (AP) - Mills E. Godwin, one of the largest operator of farming enterprises in Nansemond County, died unexpectedly at his home here today. He was for many years a member of the board of Supervisors of Nansemond County, resigning this office recently. Surviving are one son, Mills E. Godwin, Jr., of Suffolk; three daughters, Misses Mildred and Leah Godwin, of Chuckatuck, and Mrs. William Jones, of Whaleyville; one sister, Mrs. Charles T. Moses, of Appomattox, and one brother, William Godwin, of Richmond. ****************************************************************************** Mills E. Godwin Sr. of Chuckatuck Was Buried Dec. 3 Mills E. Godwin Sr., 64, one of the most prominent men of Nansemond County and the largest farm operator in this area, died suddenly December 2nd at his home in Chuckatuck, after having suffered from failing health for more than a year. He was born in Isle of Wight County July 29, 1882, the son of William Henry and Mary Darden Godwin, and went to Chuckatuik [sic] to reside at the age of 14. He had made his home there for the past half a century: [sic] He served for many years on the Nansemond County School Board and in 1931 was elected a member of the Nansemond County Board of Supervisors, on which he served until 1944 when he resigned owing to failing health. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church and was active in all communtiy activities and welfare work. He was a former member of the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club. His wife, Mrs. Otelia Darden Godwin, preceded him to the grave in August 1945. Surviving are a son, Mills E. Godwin, Jr., of Chuckatuck; three daughters, Mrs. William Jones of Whaleyville and Misses Mildred Elizabeth and Leah O. Godwin of Chuckatuck; three grandchildren, William Jonas Jones, Jr., Mills Godwin Jones and Webb Darden Jones of Whaleyville; a sister, Mrs. C.T. Moses of Appomattox, and a brother, W.H. Godwin, of Richmond. Funeral services were conducted at the residence in Chuckatuck December 3rd at 3 P.M. by Dr. I.W. Johnson, pastor of Oakland Christian Church, officiating. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk. Pallbearers were C.C. Johnson; C.T. Pruden; O.W. Newman; A.L. Glasscock; J.W. Holland; W.N. Rippey; J.R. Chapman and J.E. Gayle. County officials, members of the Nansemond County Board of Supervisors and School Board, were honorary pallbearers.
