GODWIN, RETIRED DENTIST DIES AT SUFFOLK Suffolk, Feb. 21 - Dr. Frank Whitney Godwin, 62, a retired dentist, died Friday at his home here. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday here, with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Dr. Godwin retired from his dentistry practice in 1935. Since that time he had been in the real estate business. He was a past national vice commander of the American Legion and a past commander of Suffolk Post No. 57. He was a member of the board of directors of Louise Obici Memorial Hospital and the American Bank and Trust Co. He was a past president of the Suffolk Lions Club and served on the Suffolk school board. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Judith Brewer Godwin; two daughters, Miss Anne Godwin of New York City and Mrs. R. Curtis Saunders of Suffolk; a brother, Wilmer F. Godwin of Richmond; and two grandchildren. ****************************************************************************** Suffolk - Dr. F. Whitney Godwin, 62, businessman and retired dentist, died unexpectedly at his residence here Friday about 2:15 p.m. A real estate man since his retirement from dentistry several years ago, Dr. Godwin achieved prominence in many fields here during the last 30 years. He has served in the past as chairman of the School Board, president of the Lions Club, and commander of Suffolk Post 57, American Legion. At his death he was a director of Obici Memorial Hospital, a member of the board of the American Bank and Trust Co., and president of the Riverview Land and Investment Co. He belonged to Oxford Methodist Church. VETERAN OF WORLD WAR I Dr. Godwin achieved his greatest state and national prominence, however, as a veteran of World War I. He served two terms as commander of the Suffolk American Legion Post, then became district commander, Virginia departmental vice commander, national executive committeeman and national vice commander. In 1939 he was elected vice president of the International Federation of World War Veterans and president of its American section. As a veterans’ leader, he was chosen in 1937 as a member of the official delegation to attend dedications of all U.S. government battle monuments erected in Europe. During World War I he won a commission in the infantry and fought with French as well as American troops overseas. He was wounded in action while commanding a company. Service in the Army interrupted studies which led to a degree in 1921 at the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He had already graduate from Fork Union Military Academy and the University of Richmond. After completing his dental studies he practiced for a time in New York but soon returned to Suffolk. He was a son of the late Charles Bernard Godwin and Martha Whitney Godwin of Chuckctuck. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Judith Brewer Godwin; two daughters, Miss Judith Anne Godwin of New York and Mrs. R. Curtis Saunders, Jr. of Suffolk; a brother, Wilmer F. Godwin of Richmond, and two grandchildren, Whitney Godwin Saunders and Carson Brewer Saunders. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the residence, 504 W. Washington St., Suffolk. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken from the R.W.
