All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ BETTIE CLEE NELMS GWALTNEY WINDSOR - Mrs. Bettie Clee Gwaltney, 71, of Route 2, vice president of Community Electic Cooperative here, died in Obici Memorial Hospital Monday at 6:25 a.m. Mrs. Gwaltney was one of the organizers of the cooperative in 1938 and served on its original board of directors. She was made vice president in 1944. The widow of Jesse Henry Gwaltney, she was a daughter of McKim and Wortley Bartlett Nelms of Nansemond County. She was a member of Windsor Congregational Christian Church, its Womens Fellowship and its Ladies Bible Class. Survivors include; six sons, William A. Gwaltney of Windsor, J. Henry Gwaltney of Suffolk, Robert A. Gwaltney of Whaleyville, Thomas M. Gwaltney of Roanoke, J. Johnson Gwaltney of Lynchburg and Chesley R. Gwaltney of Baltimore; five daughters, Mrs. Bruce K. Johnson of Windsor, Mrs. Russell Shaw of Baltimore, Mrs. J.A. Everett, Jr., of Smithfield, Mrs. E. Warren Beale of Courtland, and Mrs. J.E. Chappell of Norfolk; three sisters, Mrs. D.H. Stassford and Mrs. H.F. Saunders of Norfolk and Mrs. Marvin L. Vaughan of Suffolk; a brother, M.C. Nelms, Jr., of Norfolk; 26 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral service was conducted in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home, Suffolk, Wednesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. William A. Grissom, pastor, and the Rev. T. Fred Wright, retired. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. Bettie Clee (NELMS; Mrs. Jesse H.)
