W. Millard Stevens, pastor, assisted by Dr. R.E. Brittle of Hunterdale United Church of Christ, Franklin. Burial was in the church cemetery with Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield in charge. Pallbearers were D.C. Blythe, Howard Bailey, Charlie P. Batten, A.J. Cobb, Harry M. Carr, Martin L. Haverty, William E. Mitchell and Harvey Brown. Gwaltney, 56, died Tuesday morning, July 21 in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, after a short illness. A native of Chuckatuck, he was a resident of Smithfield for the past 15 years. He was the husband of Mrs. Grace Carter Gwaltney, formerly of Franklin, and a son of the late George Lafayette and Mrs. Annie Uzzell Gwaltney of Isle of Wight County. He was employed in the Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. for 25 years and a former member of the Suffolk Police Department for 15 years. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church, Chuckatuck, and its Men’s Bible Class. Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Fletcher of Newport News; one son of Michael Jonathan Gwaltney of the Army Green Beret, Massachusetts; one sister, Mrs. Eloise Gwaltney Bailey, Maitland, Fla., a brother, George Lafayette Gwaltney, Jr., Chuckatuck; a grandson and a number of nieces and nephews.
