All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ GRIFFIN RITES ARE HELD HERE Services Held At St. Mary's SUFFOLK, Sept. 24. - Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Riopel Griffin, of Richmond, formerly of Suffolk, were conducted at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's Catholic Church by the Rev. J.O. Schmidhauser, pastor, assisted by Father Harold Nott and Father T.J. Healy, of Richmond, and Father Joseph Brennan, of Norfolk. The casket was covered with a cross of white gladioli, white chrysanthemums, white gladioli and baby's breath. The hymns sung were "Mother Dear, O Pray For Me," "To Jesus Heart All Burning" and "Look Upon Me, Mother." Active pallbearers were Whitney Winborne, Anthony Mehalko, Marion F. Monohan, Carr Hill, Winston Camp, Steverson Boykins [sic; Stephenson Boykin] and G. C. Neblett. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers and burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. While in Suffolk, Mrs. Griffin had lived at the home of Mrs. Catherine C. Winborne on Pinner Street. She was at one time in training at Lakeview Hospital here and had once been employed at the old D.P. Paul Music Company here. Mrs. Griffin's daughter, Theresa, is a student at St. Joseph's Villa in Richmond. Mrs. Griffin also is survived by her mother, Mrs. Mary Riopel, of Ivor; a sister, Lenore, a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. ****************************************************************************** Former Ivor Lady Is Slain On Streets In Richmond, Va. Suffolk, Sept. 22 - Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Riopel Griffin, who was killed in a daylight shooting in Richmond yesterday afternoon, will be conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Church here on Monday at 10 AM by the Rev. Father J.O. Schmidhouser. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The body was taken to the Harcum Funeral Home in Waverly and rosary services were conducted there Sunday at 8 P.M. Mrs. Riopel, the former Miss Edna Riopel of Ivor, is survived by a small daughter, Theresa Griffin; her mother, Mrs. Mary Riopel of Ivor, and a sister, Lt. Leonore Riopel, ANC, who recently returned from overseas. Court Denies Bond For Accused Killer Willie A. Brittle, 51, was certified to the October Grand Jury of Hustings Court by Police Justice Carleton E. Jewett this morning following the shooting yesterday in downtown Richmond before scores of spectators. Witnesses reported to police that Brittle accosted the victim, Mrs. Edna Griffin, 33, as she came out of a theatre yesterday afternoon and, climaxing a dispute, pushed her to the pavement and fired five shots into her with a heavy- caliber revolver. The grand jury convenes on Monday, October 1, at 10 A.M. At the request of Judge John Ingram of Hustings Court, bail for Brittle was denied by Justice Jewett. Brittle previously had been brought into Police Court on charges of felonious assault on Mrs. Griffin on September 12 and had been released under $500 bond.
