Gardner; aged 42 years, 1 month and 5 days. Bro. Gardner was a great sufferer with consumption. I saw him on Thursday, before he died on Friday, and read and prayed with him. He said he had no fear about the future but he hated to leave his wife and little children. He was a son of Bro. Matthew Gardner. He was devoted to his family and was a good neighbor and friend. He leaves to mourn their loss a devoted wife, four children, father, mother, four brothers, and many friends. His funeral services were conducted at his home in the presence of many friends and his remains were buried at his father's in the family cemetery. H.H.B. [Rev. His widow Juliette (WHITLEY) GARDNER (1867 - 1919) 2m. widower John Franklin UZZELL in 1918, but she is buried with Edward. The lot was owned by their son-in-law Herman Allen JONES (1890 - 1941), who m. their daughter Cora Alberta GARDNER (1892 - 1950) in 1914. The 1900 Census - Chuckatuck Dist., Nansemond Co. - gives L.E., b. May 1822. His father Matthew GARDNER (1837 - 1917) was a Confederate veteran. He was conscripted from the militia into the 41st VA Infantry as a private; he transferred to the 18th Battalion VA Heavy Artillery, Co. A, and detailed to the Belle Isle POW camp.
