Gardner Sr., 76, of Route 4 died Thursday at his home. A native of Isle of Wight County, he was a son of George Nelson and Mrs. Ella Johnson Gardner and the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Mathias [sic; Mathis*] Gardner. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Herbert Allen Richwine of Richmond; six sons, Hiram J. Gardner Jr. and Frederick L. Gardner of Nansemond County, Rochelle Wilson Gardner and Broadus Luther Gardner of Norfolk, Thomas Allen Gardner of Isle of Wight County, and Charlie Hudson Gardner of Inman, S.C.; four stepdaughters, Mrs. J.J. Sexton of Gatesville, N.C., Mrs. Vernon E. Duke of Portsmouth, Mrs. Wallace Sexton of Winton, N.C., and Mrs. Juanita Christiansen of Washington; a stepson, Thomas T. Mathias of Ahoskie, N.C.; eight grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. The body was taken to I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church by the Rev. K. Donald Berg. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. Hiram is marked with his first wife Verna May (HOBBS) GARDNER (1893 - 1939); however, D.Cert. 9297 (Williamsburg '39 #65) states she was buried in a GARDNER family cemetery. D.Cert. 70-003161 gives also gives his widow as Elizabeth (MATHIAS) GARDNER. Rather, Elizabeth (née DAIL) was the widow of Paul Eley MATHIS (1901 - 1950), buried in Oakland Cemetery, Tallahassee, Leon Co., FL. Hiram & Elizabeth m. 17 Jun 1952 in Greensville Co. Elizabeth (1900 - 1986) is buried in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, Hertford Co., NC. His parents are buried in Windsor Cemetery.
