RUTH WOLFLEY GARDNER 

MRS. WOLFLEY GARDNER 

  WHALEYVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Wolfley Gardner, 68, a retired school teacher, died 
at 2:30 a.m. today at Obici Memorial Hospital following a long illness. 

  She was a native of Gates County, N.C., and daughter of the late Jefferson 
Davis Wolfley and Daisy Douthtie [sic; Doughtie] Wolfley of Gates County, N.C. 

  She is survived by her husband, Ernest Washington Gardner, two daughters, 
Mrs. Thomas J. Hyatt of Suffolk and Mrs. John D. Keating of Hawaii; one son, 
Staley V. Gardner of Whaleyville; four sisters, Mrs. W.A. Mitchell, Suffolk, 
Mrs. Roy Simpler of Rehoboth Beach, Del., Mrs. J.R. Davidson, Newport News, 
and Mrs. Marshall Harrell, Whaleyville; two brothers, B.D. Wolfley and Jack 
Wolfley of Whaleyville, and six grandchildren. 

  She was a member of Whaleyville Methodist Church, the Wesley Bible Class and 
WSCS of the church.  She taught for 20 years in Norfolk County. 

  The body was taken to I.O. Hill and Co. Funeral Home.  Services will be held 
at 3 p.m. Sunday at Whaleyville Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. W.T. 
Kessler.  The body will lie in state at the church from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

  Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Wolfley Gardner, who died Thursday, were 
conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Whaleyville Methodist Church by the Rev. W.T. 
Kessler.  Burial was in the church cemetery. 

  Pallbearers were J. Morris Ward, Vernon L. Riddick, Hurley Jones, F.L. 
Dougherty, W. Floyd Baines, James C. Knight, Jr., L. Carroll Umphlette and 
Curtis G. Walters.
