All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Robert Heffington Dies In Automobile Accident SUFFOLK, July 3 - A local youth was killed and his companion was injured critically late yesterday afternoon when the automobile in which they were riding toward Suffolk rammed the underpass of the Atlantic Coast Line railroad, which spans Route 58. Robert Garland Herrington, 20, recently discharged from the Navy, died of a fractured skull at the scene of the accident, and John A. Howell of Route 3, Norfolk, was taken to Lakeview Hospital, where he was reported to have suffered a possible fractured skull, brain concussion, and internal injuries. Both were employed in the Norfolk office of A.L. Wright, Jr., and Company, which deals in refrigerator service. Heffington, who resided with his grandmother, Mrs. Fred Pierce of 304 Highland Avenue, began to work for the company only last week as an apprentice in refrigerator service. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. T.O. Heffington of Hobson and served 22 months in the Pacific. Other survivors include four brothers, Carlton E. and Frederickson T. Heffington, both of Suffolk, and Milton F. and Earl Heffington, both of Hobson, and two sisters, Mrs. John D. Parr, of Suffolk, and Miss Betty Anne Heffington of Hobson. Harrell is married and has six children. Funeral services for Heffington will be conducted at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Hill Funeral Home with Rev. J. Lester Lane, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** R. G. Heffington Funeral Held SUFFOLK, July 5. - Funeral services for Robert G. Heffington, who was killed Tuesday in an automobile accident on the Norfolk-Suffolk Highway, were conducted yesterday afternoon at the Hill Funeral Home. Rev. J. Lester Lane, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated. Mrs. Claudia Jacobs, Mrs. Vernon Spivey and Rev. Charles W. Jones, accompanied by Mrs. Julian Goodwin, sang, "The Old Rugged Cross," and Rev. Jones sang, "Sunrise." The pall was of Easter lilies, pink and yellow gladioli and baby's breath. Active pallbearers were Thomas Blair, J.W. Nelms, Worth Davenport, Thomas Hearn Jr., Chappelle Hancock, Luther Gray, Lloyd Grady and Joseph Byrum. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
