A native of Nansemond County, he was a son of Nathaniel H. and Mrs. Ida Riddick Hayes. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was an employee of Planters Nut & Chocolate Co. for 24 years. In 1945 he went with Birdsong Storage Co., where he was supervisor of peanut buyers at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown Hayes; two daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hayes Ellison of Richmond and Miss Virginia Lou Hayes of Suffolk; four brothers, Sidney C. Hayes, Thomas W. Hayes and John R. Hayes of Suffolk and Leslie L. Hayes of Portsmouth; and three sisters, Mrs. Grace Hayes Harrell of Suffolk, Mrs. Margaret Hayes Metcalf of Newport News and Mrs. Helen Hayes Dunn of Norfolk. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. J.C. Mitchell of First Baptist Church. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
