Hackney, who died in Barrett's Neck, aged 66 years, took place Sunday afternoon from the Crittenden Methodist Church, Rev. J.C.C. Suffolk, Oct. 29. - [...] The funeral of the Mr. R.E. Hackney took place at Ebenezer M.E. Church, in Barrett's Neck yesterday at 2:30 o'clock p.m., and was conducted by the Rev. Dr. Newton. Mr. Hackney died late Saturday evening and leaves a wife, two sons and one daughter, besides many friends to mourn their loss. "Mollie" Mary A. THOMAS (1834 - 1879) before 1860; 2m. Priscilla WALTERS (1847 - 1919) 25 Sep 1879 (Nansemond Co. #87) The Nansemond Co. M.Reg. gives age 40, b. Meddville, PA. The 1880 Census - Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co. - gives age 45, b. VA. The 1900 Census - Chuckatuck, Nansemond Co. - gives age 45, b. VA. Priscilla was b. 11 Oct 1847, Nansemond Co., the daughter of Abraham & Elizabeth WALTERS. She d. 8 Jan 1919, Nansemond Co. D.Cert. 2569 (Chuckatuck #2) gives buried 9 Jan 1919, Hobson, by R.W. Baker & Co. The informant was her step-son W.F. HACKNEY of Hobson. He was a Federal veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in Co. G, 5th NY Mounted Rifles, 14 Aug 1862 at NYC, eventually rising to 1st Sergeant. He was transferred as a 2nd Lieutenant to Co. G, 4th NY Provisional Cavalry, 6 Sep 1865, and was mustered out 29 Nov 1865 at City Point. He applied for an Invalid pension 1 May 1882; the application states he served in Co. G, 4th NY Provisional Cavalry, Co. G, 1st NY Mounted Rifles, and Co. G, 7th NY Cavalry. Priscilla applied for a widow's pension 28 Nov 1900. His son William Freeman HACKNEY of Hobson, a retired deck hand, was buried 20 Apr 1937 in Mount Zion Christian Church Cemetery, Crittenden. WALTERS was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. F, 9th VA Infantry. He was wounded July 1, 1862 at Malvern Hill, deserted to the enemy October 6, 1863, and was released from Baltimore later that month.
