A native of Roanoke, he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Beale Hawkins and a son of the late Phillip A. and Mrs. Effie Lee Wright Hawkins. He was a carpenter. He was a member of Magnolia United Methodist Church and its Wesley Bible Class, Board of Trustees, Board of Finance, and chairman of the Building Committee, and member of Magnolia Ruritan Club. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. James C. Griffin Jr. of Nansemond County; four brothers, John E. Hawkins of Corapeake, N.C., Frank Owen Hawkins of Nansemond County, Phillip A. Hawkins of Moyock, N.C., and Thomas A. Hawkins of Woodbridge; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth K. Jakeman and Mrs. Charles A. Grizzard Sr. of Nansemond County and Mrs. Orpah Rudder of Brookneal; and three grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home by the Rev. William J. Burleigh. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. His widow's obit appeared in the "Virginian-Pilot," Apr. 14, 2008. His father (1884 - 1957) is buried in Old Linn Cemetery, Camden Co., MO.
