HIGGINS, JR. John Francis Higgins, Jr., 71, died Saturday night at his home in Crittenden. He was the son of the late John F. Higgins and Mary Frances Pitts. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Bertie Q. [sic; O.] Higgins; four daughters, Mrs. Katherine Post and Mrs. Floyd Darden, of Crittenden, Mrs. R.C. Whinyates, of Bennett's Creek, and Mrs. H.L. Gale, of Reid's Ferry; a brother, W.A. Higgins, of Portsmouth, and eight grandchildren. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and Redmen of Crittenden and of the Crittenden Methodist Church. The body will lie in state from 3 to 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the residence. Funeral serviced will be held at that time with interment following in Mt. Zion Church Cemetery. No D.Cert. found. The 1900 Census - Chuckatuck Dist., Nansemond Co. gives b. Sep 1875. His WW-I draft card gives b. 8 Sep 1875. His father was a Confederate veteran, having tranferred from Co. F, 9th VA Infantry, to the C.S.S. "Virginia" [Merrimac]. He lost a leg 24 Dec 1864 at the 1st Battle of Ft. Fisher, NC, and thereafter used a walking stick made from a piece of the "Virginia."
