HATTON DIES IN NEW YORK V.M.I. CADET AT BATTLE OF NEWMARKET, SERVED THROUGH REMAINER OF WAR Suffolk, Jan. 15 - Mrs. G.H. Royster was notified today of the death in New York of her father, Gen Clarence R. Hatton, formerly of Suffolk, aged 77. General Hatton was commander of the New York department of the United Confederate Veterans. He was the son of Daniel Hatton and Cornelia Riddick Hatton, one of the oldest families of this community, who lived in the early days of Suffolk on Stocklay farm. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. G.H. Royster, of this city; Mrs. C.R. Barnes, of Crandall, N.J., and Mrs. W.E. Smith, of Scotland Neck, N.C., and several grandchildren, one of whom is Hatton Royster, formerly of Suffolk. General Hatton was one of the cadets at Virginia Military Institute who participated in the Battle of New Market. He continued in the Confederate service during the war, entering as lieutenant and rising to the rank of major. He was wounded in the neck during the fighting around Petersburg. He served under General Godwin, of Portsmouth. After the close of war General Hatton was adjutant general of the United Confederate Veterans. He was prominent for years in the activities of the department of New York of the veterans’ organizations, finally becoming chief of the department. He received his diploma from V.M.I., three years ago. Funeral arrangements were completed tonight. Services will be conducted at St. Stephen’s Church, New York, tomorrow and interment will be in the Confederate Cemetery in that city. [Gen. Clarence R. HATTON, formerly of Suffolk, d.
