All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ [photo, captioned:] GENERAL JULIUS HOWELL General Julius Howell, Death Victim at 102, Occasional Visitor Here Confederate Army General Julius Howell died at his home in Bristol, Va., Saturday - Six months after the public observance of his 102nd birthday. His death reduces the number of surviving Virginia Confederate Veterans to five. General Howell was born in 1846 near South Quay, the son of Edward and Sarah Howell. He served in Company "K," 24th Virginia Cavalry, during the War Between the States. Among surviving relatives in this area are Miss Emily Pittman, a member of the Suffolk High School faculty, who is a great-niece, and Hill Kilby, also a nephew. General Howell had visited in Suffolk several times in recent years with Mr. Kilby. On his most recent visit last Fall he addressed the high school student body. An educator as well as a soldier, General Howell had attended Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. He served as a school superintendent in Arkansas, taught history at the University of Arkansas, and later became president of the Mountain Home, Ark., Baptist college. He made his home in Bristol after becoming president of Virginia Intermont College there in 1901. Funeral services for General Howell were held this afternoon at 4 o'clock at the First Baptist Church in Bristol, with graveside services conducted by the Hackler-Wood Post of the American Legion. Howell is survived by his second wife, Mrs. Maude Sharp Howell. Gen. HOWELL, and two of his gravestone - added by Andy Walter - are posted with Find a Grave Memorial #22475979. D.Cert. 12483 (Bristol #118) gives occupation as insurance agent. He applied for a Confederate pension 10 Jun 1932 in Bristol, Washington Co., VA, stating he was partially disabled, and had been wounded at the battle of Darbytown [Road] in 1864. His title as general stems from his two terms as National Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans in 1939 and 1940.
