All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ JULIUS HOWELL Bristol, June 19 - General Julius Howell, whose 102d birthday was observed here January 17, died at 8:30 p.m. tonight at his home here after an illness of three weeks. The former president of Virginia Intermont College was known as the last survivor of Longstreet’s Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia. His birthday on January 17 was celebrated as "General Howell Day." He was a former commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans, Born in Nansemond County, Va., on January 17, 1846, Howell enlisted at the age of 15 in the Confederate Army. He served as a courier on the staffs of Gen. Roger W. Prior, of Virginia, and Gen. John Braxton, of North Carolina, both cavalry commanders.* He was captured three days before the surrender at Appomattox, and spent three months as a Union prisoner at Point Lookout, Md. He was discharged as a corporal at Fort Monroe, Va. His title as general stems from his two terms as national commander in chief of the United Confederate Veterans in 1939 and 1940. After the war he attended Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania, earning degrees as master of arts in history and a doctor of laws. He served as a school superintendent in Arkansas after that, and was late, appointed to the chair of history at the University of Arkansas. He subsequently became president of the Mountain Home, Ark., Baptist College. In 1901 he came to Bristol as president of Virginia Intermont College. When he retired at Virginia Intermont, he entered the insurance business, and actively conducted his insurance agency until recently. In addition to his work with insurance, he was active in religious, educational and other activities of the city. He served as treasurer and honorary deacon of the First Baptist Church, was an honorary member of the Bristol Rotary Club, was chairman of the board of trustees of Virginia Intermont College, and a member of the Tennessee Confederate Pension Board. He was also for many years a member of the Bristol School Board. His 102nd birthday in January was the occasion for a celebration in which Movie Star Mary Pickford. Governor William M. Tuck, of Virginia, and Governor Jim Nancy McCord, of Tennessee; Mrs. Helen Dortch Longstreet, widow of Gen James A. Longstreet under whom Howell served, all took part. [*Gen. Roger A.
