One of Suffolk’s prominent citizens in the person of Mr. Joseph Patton Hall, Jr., died on Wednesday at his home on Saratoga Street at the age of 75 years. Mr. Hall had been actively engaged in the drug business in Suffolk for a long time and as head of the Joseph P. Hall Drug Company was widely known among business men in this section. In his youth he enlisted in the War Between the States and served with distinction in Mahone Brigade until the close of hostilities Quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, but possessing many sterling traits of character and active in church work, he had large numbers of friends in Suffolk and this section who will deeply regret his passing away. He was a member of the vestry of St. Paul’s P.E. church for a long term of years and had been junior warden for a number of years. Mr. Hall was a member of Tom Smith Camp of Confederate Veterans and a member of the Suffolk lodge of Masons. His wife, Mrs. Anna Copeland Hall, preceded him to the grave some years ago. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. L.M. Jordan and Miss Virginia Hall; one brother, Edward W. Hall; three nieces, Mrs. E.M.C. Quimby, Mrs. Harvey Holland and Miss Virginia Jordan, and other relatives. The funeral services were held at St. Paul’s P.E. church, where the deceased for half a century had worshiped. Thursday afternoon at 4 o’clock, conducted by the Rev. J.F. Coleman. The active pallbearers were the members of the force of the Hall Drug company, L.D. Pruden, M.A. Ballard, M.O. Spence, Lycurgus Hollowell, Mr. Gilliam, Joseph Stevenson, Ralph Roe and H.M. Pinner. Honorary pallbearers: the vestrymen of St. Paul’s P.E. Church, W.E. Hines, C.L. Hutchins, J.H. Taylor, Hamilton McClellan, Herbert West, J.T. Withers, J.F. Pinner, L.D. Tanner, P.T. Cohoon, W.J. Pettie, R.L. Woodward Jr., and A.A. Riddick, Dr. H.W. Campbell, Dr. J.M. Gibson, Dr. L.P. Whedbee, W.B. Brewer, Col. E.E. West, Judge R.R. Prentis, E.E. Jones, Arthur Woolford, H.L. Land, J.H. Corbitt. The members of the Suffolk Lodge, A.F. and A.M., No. 30, attended the services in a body and the burial was conducted with Masonic honors. The few remaining members of the Tom Smith Camp of Confederate Veterans also attended the services. Interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
