All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Philip Hill Dies in Norfolk Philip Bland Hill, a charter member and president for the last three years of the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, died Friday night in Norfolk General Hospital. Hill, who was recognized as the rescue squad's goodwill ambassador long before he became its president, often appeared before civil organizations and other groups to speak on behalf of the work of the rescue squad. He was a native of Como, N.C., a son of Aurelious [sic*] Oscar Hill and Mrs. Lucy Love Bland Hill. He was the husband of Ida May Hill, who survives. He was a member of Suffolk Christian Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jeanne Hill Shaw of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Carr of Holland, and Mrs. Audrey Edwards of Alexandria; and three grandchildren. He was employed with the Virginia Department of Highways as the district computer. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home by Dr. Robert B. Marr, minister of Suffolk Christian Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family has requested that remembrances take the form of contributions to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad. ****************************************************************************** PHILIP BLAND HILL SUFFOLK - A funeral service for Philip B. Hill was conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Baker Funeral Home, by the Rev. Robert B. Marr. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Hill, 58, president of the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, died Friday at 9:10 a.m. in Norfolk General Hospital after a short illness. He was to have retired from the squad presidency Dec. 31 after three years in office. Hill was widely known also as a Sea Scout leader, having served as unit skipper. The Rescue Squad removed its Christmas decorations Saturday morning and placed the flag in front of the building at half-mast. Hill, a charter member of the Rescue Squad, served his turn regularly in ambulance driving and first aid work. During his 10 year service he delivered several babies in ambulances on the way to the hospital. He was an employee of the State Department of Highways having joined the department in 1938 as a mechanic. At the time of his death; he was computer for the Suffolk District. A native of Como, N.C., he moved to Chuckatuck in Nansemond County at the age of 14 and graduated from Chuckatuck High School. He was a son of Aurelious Oscar and Lucy Love Bland Hill. He was a member of the Suffolk Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida May Hill; a daughter Mrs. Jeanne Hill Shaw of Suffolk; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Carr of Holland and Mrs. Audrey Edwards of Alexandria; and three grandchildren.
