Howell Succumbs Here Miss Ruth Estelle Howell of 711 Gittings St., medical recording librarian at the old Lakeview Hospital from 1916 until her retirement in 1952, died at 2 a.m. today at the Obici Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was better known to her many friends and acquaintances as "Miss Ruth." Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. John C. Mitchell, pastor of the First Baptist Church and Dr. H.S. Hardcastle, pastor of Oakland Christian Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Prior to 1916 Miss Howell was secretary and receptionist at the office of Dr. J.E. Rawls, Dr. David L. Rawls and Dr. D.L. Harrell when their office was located down town. When the hospital was built in 1905 she became medical librarian at the hospital. A native of Isle of Wight County, she was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Woman's Missionary Union of the church and a charter member of the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was the daughter of the late George W. Howell of Gates County, N.C., and Louella Turnley Howell of Henrico County. She is survived by two sisters, Miss Fannie B. Howell and Mrs. George A. Howerton Sr. of Suffolk, a brother, John A. Howell of Suffolk, and several nieces and nephews.
