Howell Dies In Hospital After Long Illness William Henry Howell, aged 73 years, prominent farmer of Nansemond County, died Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock in a local hospital. He is survived by his widow, who was formerly Miss Mattie Eley, and nine children, Mrs. Milton Holland, of Holland, Mrs. Maude Jones of Petersburg, Va., Mrs. Marvin Reid of Holland, J.A. Howell, R.B. Howell, W.H. Howell, Jr., of Holland, I.K. Howell of Portsmouth, Robert Howell and Joseph Howell of Holland. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the residence near Holland, conducted by the Rev. W.C. Hook, assisted by Dr. N.G. Newman. Holland, Lee Harrison, Lonnie Harrell, J.C. Griffin, J.T. Rawles, Jule Rawles, S.W. Holland, H.A. Luke, W.W. Darden, B.W. Council, L.J. Daughtrey, John Cutchins, Charlie Reid, Edd Reid, J.P. Dalton, A.J. Holland, W.J. Holland, E.T. Holland, Jobie Harrell, J.L. Eley. Interment was made in the family cemetery. [Ancestry.com reads his wife as "Mallie."] A scan - added by Robert Thompson - of the obverse of the D.Cert. is posted with Find a Grave Memorial #233969628 [no grave photo]. The reverse states he accidentally fell off his porch; he fractured his hip, and d. of hypostatic pneumonia. He was the son of Alfred & Louisa HOWELL. [D.Cert. gives mother as Louise.] His family appears in the 1860 Census - Upper Parish, Nansemond Co. - adjacent P.H. & Joanna LEE. The record of his first marriage gives b. Southampton Co., but that could refer to his wife; her parents, James Madison & "Pollie" Mary F. (HARCUM) GARDNER, were both b. in Southampton Co. (Nansemond Co. M.Reg. 1877 #112) William 2m. "Mattie" Martha Elizabeth ELEY, daughter of James & Martha (WHITFIELD) ELEY, 28 Jan 1920 in Suffolk. Mattie (1879 - 1958) is buried with their son Joseph Dayton HOWELL (1923 -1985) in South Quay Baptist Church Cemetery.
