Suffolk, April 24 - John Copeland Holladay, 64, died this afternoon at a local hospital, following a brief illness and operation. Mr. Holladay had been assistant Postmaster at Suffolk since May 1, 1915, and was one of Suffolk’s most popular and well-loved citizens. He was the son of the late Frank Alto* Holladay and was a grandson of Col. John R. Copeland, who was founder of the Farmer Bank of Nansemond. Mr. Holladay’s ancestry both paternal and maternal dated back to early days of the colony. He was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church and was educated at Elon College, North Carolina. He was a member of Suffolk Lodge No. 30, A.F. and A.M., and was the organizer of Hiram Lodge 340, A.F. and A.M., and a member of Mount Nebo Royal Arch Chapter No. 20, and was for many years treasurer for all three Masonic lodges. OUTSTANDING MASON He was the first Worshipful Master of Hiram Lodge, and served as Worshipful Master of Suffolk Lodge No. 30 and as Most Excellent High Priest of Mount Nebo Royal Arch Chapter 20. Mr. Holladay served as a member of the Town Council before Suffolk was made a city, and also as a magistrate in the town. He was also for several years assistant county clerk in the office of the Nansemond County clerk. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Pat Long Holladay; three sons, John C. Holladay, Jr., of Suffolk; Dr. Beverly L. Holladay, of Wytheville, and Frank D. Holladay, of Newport News; five grandchildren, Beverly and Robert Hunter Holladay, Cleo and Katherine Beverly Holladay and Frank D. Holladay, Jr.; two brothers, Frank A. Holladay and Joseph E.B. Holladay and a sister, Mrs. Robert H. Pretlow, of Suffolk, and a nephew, Francis Pretlow. The body will be taken from the funeral home of I.O. Hill and Company Thursday afternoon to his late residence, 312 Bank Street, and funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Herbert Rucker, rector, officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery by Suffolk Lodge No. 30 A.F. and A.M.
