Holland, passed peacefully away on Saturday, May 26, 1906, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.T. Rawles, at Holland, Va., at the age of 81 years. She was the daughter of Jethro and Nancy Sumner and born near Factory Hill, in Nansemond County. She was the last of a large family of sisters and brothers to pass over the river, her brother, the late Charles E. Sumner, having preceded her several years ago. At an early age she was married to Dixon H. Holland and to them were born ten children. Six died in early life and four survive her. They are Mrs. David McClenny, Myrtle Va.; Mr. Jethro S. Holland, Holland, Va.; Mrs. Julius T. Rawles, Holland, Va.; and Mrs. C. Council, Fenton, Va. There are twenty four grandchildren living. In her early life she professed faith in Christ and joined Holy Neck Christian Church and was a consistent member for sixty years or more. She was always looked upon as a Mother in Israel, and no one seemed to enjoy the revival season more than she, and as long as her health would permit she was always a regular attendant at her church. She was a model of piety and devotion to her church and family. Since the death of her husband she spent the most of her time with her daughter, Mrs. J.T. Rawles. Several months ago her health began to fail and all saw that it was only a question of a little time before she would be no more in the flesh. She gradually grew weaker until the end came when she went to join the loved ones who had gone before and to be with her Lord and Master whom she loved and served so well. During those months of suffering and lingering all was done that could be to relieve her, and if possible restore her to health again by her children, and especially by the one at whose home she was. The funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. C.H. Rowland, assisted by Rev. I.W. Johnson, from the Holland Christian Church on Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends; who came to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed. Six of her grandsons acted as pall-bearers, and the remains were then carried and laid beside those of her in the family cemetery at the old homestead to await the resurrection morn. The flowers sent by relatives and friends were beautiful. Mary Eliza (SUMNER; Mrs. Dixon H.)
