Holland, Widely Known Citizen, Was About to Crank Car Suffolk, Dec. 26. - The entire community was shocked this morning when the news was received in Suffolk that William H. Holland, for the past quarter of a century and more, superintendent of the Nansemond County almshouse, and one of the best known men of the county, had died suddenly while on his way to Norfolk, to take dinner with one of his daughters in that city. Mr. Holland, with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Stafford Fooshe [sic; Foushe], were driving in their car to Norfolk, about 3:30 o'clock. When a mile out of Holland, the car stopped and Mr. Holland stooped to crank it. As he did this, he fell, and in a few minutes was dead. He was taken by Mr. and Mrs. Fooshe back to his home, and other members of the family were summoned. Mr. Holland had been in apparently fine health and spirits all during the holidays, and had visited his sons and daughters on Sunday. Besides being superintendent of the county almshouse, he was a deacon in the Bethlehem Christian Church and was prominent in all county affairs. He is survived by a widow, who was Miss Holland, of the county; two sons, Fred C. Holland, of Suffolk, and J. Dudley Holland, of Norfolk; two daughters, Mrs. O.D. Kink [sic; King], of Suffolk, and Mrs. Stafford Fooshe, of Norfolk; six grandchildren; three brothers, E.T. Holland, of Holy Neck, Va.; J.R. Holland and J.E. Holland, of Holland, Va.; four sisters, Mrs. W.J. Baines and Mrs. Walter Powell, of Suffolk, Miss Lillie Holland and Mrs. John Eley, of the county. The funeral service will he held Thursday at the home in the county by Dr. W.W. Staley, Dr. I.W. Johnson, Rev. William Jay and Rev. H.H. Butler. Interment will be made in Bethlehem Cemetery. Mr. Holland was 86 [sic; 65] years of age. William Henry HOLLAND, Superintendent of the Nansemond Co.
