He was a son of James Thomas Hines and Martha B. Hines, and was born in Isle of Wight County. He came to Suffolk 44 years ago. Hines was a member of the First Baptist Church and had for many years been prominent in municipal circles in the city. He was also a member of the Suffolk Lions Club. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Mary L. Walton and Mrs. Harvey F. Howell, of Suffolk; four brothers, Mills R. and W.S. Hines, of Suffolk; George T. Hines, of Norfolk, and Charles H. Hines, of Coral Gables, Fla. Hines, of Suffolk, were conducted at 2:30 p.m., this afternoon at the First Baptist Church by Rev. J. Lester Land, pastor, and Dr. S.T. Habel, pastor of the West End Baptist Church. The casket was covered with a pall of red roses, white gladioli, white carnations, calla lilies and freesia. Active pallbearers were Dr. Archie Smither, Ben Stephenson, E.W. Ewing, J.R. Vann, A.M. McBride, Paul T. Howell, J. Melvin Lovelace, and Thomas L. Woodward. Burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
