HUNTER COUNTY LEADER, DIES DURING VISIT Whaleyville - Mrs. Elizabeth Brownley Odom Hunter, 80, Nansemond County and Suffolk civic leader, died Sunday morning while visiting a daughter, Mrs. Phillip Thomas Marshall, in Newport News. She was the widow of Dr. Henry Holmes Hunter, who practiced medicine here from 1917 until his death in 1940.* She was a charter member of Suffolk Woman's Club and of the Suffolk- Nansemond County Chapter American Red Cross. She was an organizer of the Whaleyville Home Demonstration Club and for years was active in the Suffolk- Nansemond Tuberculosis Association, the American Cancer Society, and the Democratic Party. From 1918 to 1959 she was registrar in this area for the state Vital Statistics Bureau. She was a member of Gen. Roberts Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, and of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. She was a member of Whaleyville Methodist Church and its Woman's Society of Christian Service and Wesley Bible Class. A native of Walterboro, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Dempsey and Patty Riddick Odom of Gates County, N.C. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Marshall of Newport News and Mrs. Fitz Ormon Clarke of Whaleyville; and three grandchildren, Henry Holmes Hunter Clarke and Fitz Ormon Clarke, Jr. of Whaleyville and Brownley Hunter Marshall of Newport News. A funeral service will be conducted in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, Tuesday at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Carl Cosslett of Whaleyville Methodist Church. The body is at I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home, Suffolk. The family requests omission of flowers. ****************************************************************************** Mrs. Hunter Rites Conducted Yesterday WHALEYVILLE - Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Brownley Odom Hunter were conducted yesterday afternoon at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Carl E. Cosslett, pastor of Whaleyville Methodist Church. The casket was covered with a pall of pink sweetheart roses, pink carnations and white stock. Pallbearers ware Henry Holmes, Hunter Clarke, Fitz Odom Clarke, Jr., Henry Hunter Odom, William M. Harrison, Jr., Surry Harrison, William J. Jones, Dr. M.T. Plyler, Jr., Thomas D. Odom, J.R.
