Ashton Harris, 63, one of the leading attorneys of Tidewater Virginia and one of Suffolk’s best loved citizens, died yesterday afternoon at 3 o’clock, following an illness of about two hours. Mr. Harris yesterday morning taught the John E. Martin Sunday School Class of Oxford Methodist Church, and seemed in his usual health. He was stricken about 1:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at Oxford Methodist Church Tuesday morning at 10:30 o’clock by the pastor, the Rev. Nathaniel H. Davis. Mr. Harris was one of the founders of Oxford Methodist Church, was a former steward and at the time of his death was a member of the board of trustees of the church. MEMBER OF SUFFOLK LODGE He also was a member of the board of directors of the Farmers Bank of Nansemond and a member of Suffolk Lodge No. 30, A.F. & A.M. Mr. Harris represented Suffolk and Nansemond County as a delegate to the Virginia Assembly and was a member of the Virginia Bar Association and of the Suffolk Bar Association, of which he was past president. A member and past president of the Suffolk Rotary Club, Mr. Harris also was a member of the Pewter Platter Club of Norfolk, the Hampton Roads Regional Defense Council and was Government Appeal Agent for the Selective Service Board. He had served as deputy clerk and clerk of the Circuit Court of Suffolk. He was the son of John T. and Mary Frances Harris, of Surry County. He was twice married, his first wife, Mrs. Nannie Pond Harris, having died a number of years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Lloyd Harris; two daughters, Mrs. Jack Holton, of Newport News, and Miss Jane Harris, of Suffolk; two sisters, Miss Mamie Harris, of Suffolk, who made her with him; Mrs. E.C. Gay, of Newport News: two brothers, P.R. Harris and J.G. Harris, of Newport News; also three nephews, Dr. R. Ashton Gay, of Norfolk; E.G. Harris, Jr., and Herbert W. Boothe, of Newport News. ****************************************************************************** GIRLIE ASHTON HARRIS FINAL RITES HELD FOR G.A. HARRIS - HUNDREDS PAY LAST TRIBUTE Hundreds of persons filled the Oxford Methodist Church to over-flowing this morning to pay final tribute to G. Ashton Harris, 63, beloved attorney, churchman and civic leader who died suddenly Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Nathaniel H. Davis, Oxford pastor, and the Rev. Conrad Blackwell, former pastor, who is now pastor of the Central Methodist Church in Portsmouth. A large number of floral tributes were banked around the pulpit during the service. The casket was covered with a pall of red roses and white asters. Strictest simplicity marked the service. A quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. West, Jr., J.C. West, 3rd, and Mrs. Henry B. Crocker sang two hymns. A series of scripture passages were read by Mr. Davis and by Mr. Blackwell. The prayer was led by Mr. Blackwell, who also concluded the service with the reading of a poem, "Into Thy Keeping." Active pallbearers were Harry Lee Rain of Capron, George Mumford, Robert Bain, Lyle Pond, Clarence Pond of Wakefield, Dr. R. Ashton Gay of Norfolk, Willie S. Riddick and George Smith. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Suffolk Rotary Club, the Suffolk Bar Association, the Men’s Bible Class, directors of Farmers Bank, trustees of Oxford Methodist Church and friends of the family.
