HARRELL DIES AT AGE OF 61 Lynchburg, March 8 - Dr. David Lemuel Harrell, 61, former superintendent of state hospitals at Petersburg, Lynchburg and Staunton, died Friday in Arlington. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Fairview Christian Church in Lynchburg. Dr. Harrell began his service with the state in 1931 when he was appointed first assistant physician at Lynchburg State Colony. He became clinical director of the colony in 1933. In 1938 he was named as superintendent of the projected Petersburg State Colony, now Petersburg State Hospital and served there until 1943, when he was chosen superintendent of Western State Hospital in Staunton. Three years later he was transferred back to the Lynchburg institution to become its superintendent. In 1952 he announced his retirement to enter private practice. A native of Suffolk, Dr. Harrell was graduated from Elon College, N.C., and Medical College of Virginia. He served his internship at University of Virginia Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Katie Moore Harrell; a son, Lemuel D. Harrell of Arlington; a daughter, Miss Dorothy Harrell of Arlington; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn H. Carlisle and Mrs. A.B. Pamplin, both of Richmond, and a brother, Joshua B. Harrell of Suffolk. [Dr. David Lemuel HARRELL, b.
