Harrell. Born in Nansemond County, March 26, 1824, the son of Abram and Esther Harrell, and the grandson of General Cole, a soldier in the American Army in the War of the Revolution. Mr. Harrell, affectionately known in the later years as "Uncle Bob" had lived to see a changed world. In his boyhood, he saw the first railroad train in this section, lived when clothes were made by hand, before the days of sewing machines, traveled by horseback and stage coach over almost impassible roads, and by slow sailing vessels; lived through four great wars, the Mexican War, War of the Secession, Spanish-American and World War, was himself a soldier of Confederacy, being a member of Company I, Fourteenth Virginia Regiment. He was born just one year after the famous "Old Nat’s Insurection," which filled this county and Southampton with terror ninety-five years ago. His parents were pioneers of this county, and were among its first settlers. He was a contractor for a long number of years. He is survived by two nieces, Mrs. W.R. Frazier, of Suffolk, and Mrs. Henry Parker of the county and one nephew, Robert A. Harrell, also of the county, and a nephew and niece by marriage, who were son and daughter to him and with whom he made his home, Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Harrell. Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Harrell, this morning, conducted by Rev. Dr. H.J. Goodwin. Interment was made in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
