Va., April 1. - (Special) - [...] DEATH OF A HOTEL PROPRIETOR. - Mr. Columbus Jones, better known to his friends as "Tobe," died this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, after an illness of something like two years with consumption. His sickness was not of such a nature, however, as to prevent attendance to business till within the past month or two, when he has been confined to his room almost constantly. The funeral services will take place at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the Christian Church, Dr. W.W. Staley officiating. The members of Welcome Lodge, No. 60, K. of P., to which he belonged, will assemble at 3 o'clock to attend the services in a body. Mr. Jones was a gentleman whose liberality and genial manner had won hosts of friends, not only in Suffolk, but in Norfolk and Portsmouth, and with travelling men among whom he was thrown in the hotel business. He had been proprietor of the Stuart House for several years, and was for a time connected with the St. Elino, in Portsmouth. He was also one of the owners of the Suffolk Hotel, which was burned some years ago. The deceased leaves four children, Misses Lillian, Alice, Kittie May and Clifford Jones; two sisters, Mrs. J.F. Lotzia and Mrs. G.P. Cotte [sic; Cottle], and a devoted wife. He was 46 years of age. His life was insured in the Endowment Rank, Knights of Pythias, for $3,000. ****************************************************************************** Funeral of Columbus Jones - [...] Suffolk, Va.. April 2. - (Special.) - [...] LAID TO REST. - The members of Welcome Lodge, No. 50, K. of P., and a goodly collection of other friends, assembled at the Christian Church at 4 o'clock this afternoon to do honor to the remains of the lamented Columbus (Tobe) Jones. The funeral services were conducted by the pastor. Dr. W.W. Staley, assisted by Revs. J.F. Love, D.B. Austin and H.H. Butler. The interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery, the Pythians having charge of the burial ceremonies. The following served as pall-bearers: Col. Thos. W. Smith, M.F. Lloyd, Dr. W.D. Wood, Col. H.E. Smith. William H. Jones, Jr., Commodore L.W. Jordan, Wiley Knight and John C. Smith.
