ERNEST ELWOOD JONES

E.E. JONES, 66, SUFFOLK BANK LEADER, DIES

   Suffolk, Dec. 28 - Ernest E. Jones, 66, widely known Suffolk banker and 
president of the American Bank and Trust Company here, died at a local 
hospital last night.

   The son of the late William Thomas Jones and Nettie Brothers Jones, of 
Nansemond County and Suffolk, Mr. Jones organized the American Bank and 
Trust Company in 1912 and became president of the bank in 1940.

   In 1941, he organized an agriculture and livestock department in the 
bank, one of the first such departments in any bank in the area.

   He is survived by a sister, Miss Martha Bernice Jones, of Suffolk; an 
uncle, Lyman R. Brothers, of Suffolk; an aunt, Mrs. W.E. MacClenny, of 
Suffolk, and four nieces, Mrs. Thomas H. Birdsong, III; Miss Betty Jones, 
and Mrs. L.H. Rawles, Jr., all of Suffolk, and Mrs. Heath Light, of Boydton.

   Funeral  services will be held at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, in 
Suffolk, Wednesday at 3 p.m. with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
