Funeral services for Gayle Johnson, who was fatally burned yesterday when his clothing became ignited as he attempted to extinguish a blaze in the barn, will be held tomorrow afternoon at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Dr. W.W. Staley officiating, assisted by the Dr. I.W. Johnson. The procession will leave the I.O. Hill funeral parlors at 2:45 and the service will be held at 3 o'clock. Mr. Johnson is said to have been fatally burned when sparks from his pipe ignited some corn shucks in the barn, and in his attempt to extinguish the blaze was fatally burned. He did manage, however, to crawl out into the open where he was seen, picked up and rushed to the Virginia Hospital, where he failed to rally to first aid treatment. He was a resident of the Claude Johnson farm near Reid's Ferry. He was 78 years of age, and is survived by one son, Hurley Johnson; one brother, Claude Johnson, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Kittrell. Pallbearers were members of Suffolk Lodge No. 30, A.F. & A.M., these being B. Martin, Loftus Hitchins, E.R. Custis, I.C. Trotman, I.B. Powell, Hersey Woodward, Jr., and W.J. Richards. Burial was with Masonic rites.
