Mr. George M. Johnson, an engineer on the Atlantic and Danville railroad, died at West Norfolk Sunday afternoon after a short illness. He leaves a wife and four children, the youngest being not more than 6 weeks old. The remains were taken charge of by the Odd Fellows of West Norfolk, and will be forwarder [sic; forwarded] to Suffolk this morning for interment. ****************************************************************************** PORTSMOUTH MATTERS [...] The Death Roll. [...] Mr. George N. Johnson, one of the engineers on the Atlantic and Danville railroad, died Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at his home in West Norfolk. He leaves a wife and four children. He was a member of West Norfolk Lodge No. 102, I.O.O.F., and will be buried in Suffolk. [...] ****************************************************************************** Suffolk, Va., June 1.- (Special.) - [...] WITH ODD FELLOWS' HONORS. Surrounded by former friends and brother craftsmen the remains of George Johnson were laid to rest about 12 o'clock to-day in Cedar Hill cemetery. The interment was conducted by West Norfolk Lodge No. 102, I.O.O.F.; Equality Lodge No. 108, I.O.O.F., of Suffolk, assisted in the ceremonies. The following, of West Norfolk, were pall-bearers: B.D. Carr, J.E. Dennis, W.J. Thomas, J.J. Newsome, E.D. Hudson and G.W. Weatherley. The funeral was preached at 8:30 in the Baptist church at West Norfolk by the Rev. Mr. Craig. The body was brought here on the Atlantic and Danville. ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK. Special to the Landmark. Suffolk, Va., June 1. - The remains of the late George Johnson arrived on the Atlantic and Danville railroad this morning from West Norfolk and were accompanied by a detachment from the lodge of Odd Fellows from that place and a detachment also from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. A committee from Equality Lodge No. 108, I.O.O.F., met the body and the friends of Mr. Johnson and escorted them to Cedar Hill Cemetery, where all that was mortal of the deceased was laid to rest with Odd Fellow and Brotherhood ceremonies. The Atlantic and Danville road, with which Mr. Johnson had been employed prior to his sickness, furnished a special car for the friends of the deceased free of charge, and a large number of relatives and friends followed the remains to its last resting place. The sympathies of the many friends of Mr. Johnson go out to his bereaved ones in their affliction. [...] George M./N.
