MARTHA JOHNSON Suffolk, Va., Oct. 1. - The funeral services of Mrs. Martha Johnson, widow of John P. Johnson of Nansemond county, will be conducted at Crittenden M.E. church, Friday morning at 11 o'clock, and at three-thirty the interment will be made in Cedar Hill cemetery, Suffolk. Mrs. Johnson, who died last night at the home of County Treasurer C.R. Fulgham, near Crittenden, was aged 83 years. She is survived by three brothers, J.E. Etheridge, Josiah Etheredge [sic; Etheridge] and Isaiah Etheredge of Norfolk; ten nephews, County Treasurer C.R. Fulgham of Nansemond county, Joseph Fulgham of Asheville, N.C., E.E. Etheredge, Myrion D. Etheredge, W.H. Etheredge, Charles Etheredge, and James Etheredge of Norfolk, Wallace Etheredge of South Carolina; David Etheredge of Seattle, Wash., Dr. Herbert Etheredge of New York; ten nieces, Misses Fannie and Virginia Etheredge, Miss Bettie Etheredge, Mrs. Sallie Jackson, Mrs. R.L. Walker, Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Hollemon of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Davis of Prlncess Anne, Mrs. Frances of Chicago, and Miss Annie Fulgham of Norfolk. Mrs. Johnson is also survived by a number of grand nieces and nephews. Numbers of relatives arrived in Suffolk today to go out to the home of Mr. Fulgham for the funeral services. The lot was owned by her nephew Caleb R. FULGHAM. He & his mother Sarah F. (ETHERIDGE; Mrs. Joseph Holloman) FULGHAM; Sarah's gravestone gives her death date wrong - 9 Apr 1879. Martha & Sarah were daughters of Isaiah & Sarah (COX) ETHERIDGE. D.Cert. 21610 (Chuckatuck #10) gives her father as Isaah. Martha 1m. Gilbert L. SAWYER. They appear in the 1860 Census in Princess Anne Co.; it gives age 30, b. VA. Gilbert was a Confederate soldier, serving in Co. C, 61st VA Infantry. He died 20 Jan 1863 in hospital of typhoid fever, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond - Sect. E, Row C, Grave 40. H, {2nd} 5th VA Cavalry. He is marked with his brother James in a MATTHEWS family cemetery, at Archers Mill & Old Myrtle Rds.; Find a Grave calls it the Johnson-Matthews Cemetery. Nansemond Co. Caleb appears with Martha & John in the 1880 Census - Chuckatuck Dist., Nansemond Co. Caleb's father also was a Confederate veteran, having served as a sergeant in Co. C, 13th VA Cavalry. He is buried with his second wife in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk.
