He was a native of Russia and had been a resident of this city for about 50 years. Besides his wife, Mrs. Annie Levy January, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Julius Conn, of Newport News, and Miss Maria January, of Suffolk; three sons, Herbert, Carlton and Helvin January, all of Suffolk, and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Norfolk, the time and place to be announced later. ****************************************************************************** Harry January, Local Merchant, Dies Early Today Was Widely Known In City and Throughout Section Where He Has Resided Many Years; Funeral Tomorrow. Harry January, a pioneer merchant of Suffolk, died at his home, 214 Pearl Street, at 1 a.m. today from a sudden heart attack. Death, like his arrival in Suffolk and his marriage, the two most important events of his life, occurred on Columbus Day. Born in Russia on November 23, 1867, Mr. January came to America as a youth and to Suffolk as a very young man. With his brother, the late Isaac P. January, he engaged in the men's clothing business until his retirement last year. The firm was active for more than 45 years and was a familiar landmark in the city's business section. Surviving Mr. January are his widow, Mrs. Annie Levy January; two daughters, Miss Maris January of Suffolk, and Mrs. Julius Conn, of Newport News; three sons, Herbert C. January, Carlton H. January and Helvin L. January, all of Suffolk; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the residence tomorrow at 2 p.m. by Rabbi Ludwig Roeder, of Newport News. Burial will be made in the Hebrew Cemetery, on Princess Anne Road, Norfolk. Mr. January was for many years an active member of Suffolk Lodge 685, B.P.O. Elks, and took interest in the affairs of the fraternal organization until his death. He was one of the founders of the congregation of Aguddath Achim, the local synagogue. [photo, captioned:] Harry January, who succumbed to a heart attack early today, one of Suffolk's pioneer merchants. ****************************************************************************** HARRY JANUARY Final Rites Today For Harry January - Prominent Suffolk Merchant Dies After Heart Attack Suffolk, Oct. 12 - Funeral services for Harry January, prominent merchant in this city for 43 years, who died suddenly this morning at his home on Pearl Street, of heart trouble, will be held at the home, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the Rabbi Ludwig Roeder, of Newport News. The body will be taken to the Hebrew Cemetery, Norfolk, for burial. Mr. January died on October 12, aged 66 years. This date played an important part in his life; he opened business in Suffolk on October 12, and October 12, he was united in marriage to Miss Annie Levy, who survives him. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Herbert C. January, Carlton and Helvin January and two daughters, Mrs. Julius Conn, of Newport News, and Miss Maria January, of Suffolk; two grandchildren; a nephew, Hilary January, of Suffolk, and niece, Miss Gladys January of Baltimore; a brother, Joseph January, of Johannesburg, Africa, who visited him several years ago, also survives. Mr. January came to Suffolk half a century ago, and was long identified with the business life of the community. He was one of the charter members of Aguddath Achim Synagogue and was for several years president of the congregation. He was also a member of Suffolk Lodge of Elks, and spent the late evening of his life in their clubrooms. Active pallbearers will be Philip Berman, I. Levy, George Stein, I. Jaffe, Sam Sherr, Victor Aultschule, Sol Laderberg and Charles Levy.
