All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ SARAH RUTH KING PEDESTRIAN IS KILLED WHEN STRUCK BY TRUCK WHALEYVILLE - Mrs. Sarah Ruth King, 72, was fatally injured when hit by a tractor-trailer truck as she was crossing Route 13 a short distance north of Whaleyville Friday night. Dr. J.R. Joyner, Nansemond County medical examiner, said Mrs. King suffered a crushed chest, broken back and possible skull fractures. State Trooper C. F. Wheeler said Mrs. King was about half a mile from her home and was halfway across the highway when she was struck. Wheeler said Mrs. King was going to visit friends who live next to Warren's Lumber Mill. Earl Hyatt, 36, the driver of the truck, told Wheeler that he saw the woman and swung the tractor to the right in an attempt to avoid hitting her. She was struck by the rear wheels as the vehicle swerved. The body was taken to the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home in Suffolk. Mrs. King was the daughter of A.T. and Mrs. Betty Savage King of Nansemond County and was a member of the Great Fork Baptist Church. She is survived by two daughters. Mrs. Andrew Goodwin and Mrs. Josephine Jones of Whaleyville; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Speight of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Fred G. Beagle of Broomall, Pa., and six grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Great Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Emmil Mialik, pastor. The body will be taken from the funeral home to the church an hour before the service. ****************************************************************************** SARAH RUTH KING SERVICE HELD SUNDAY FOR MRS. SARAH KING Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Ruth King were conducted Sunday at Great Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. M.A. Mialik, Pastor. Burial was in the family cemetery near Great Fork Church. Mrs. P. Owen Park sang a solo entitled, "In The Sweet by and By," and the church choir sang the hymn "The Old Rugged Cross." The casket was covered with a pall of pink, white and lavender asters and white chrysanthemums. Pallbearers were J.T. Tomlin, Herman L. Warren, Ernest Hayes, P. Owen Parker, Delbert Horton and Joseph Ward.
