KERNODLE, HISTORIAN, DIES, AGE 75 Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Wellons Nurney, 75, widow of Peter Jefferson Kernodle and well known here as a writer and historian for many patriotic organizations, who died Tuesday after an illness of several months at the home of her son, John T. Kernodle, 1501 Libbie Avenue, will be held at noon Wednesday at the Billups Funeral Home, Twenty-fifth and Marshall Streets. Following the service here, the body will be taken to Suffolk, where a service will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the grave. Mrs. Kernodle, a daughter of John Thomas Nurney and Mrs. Sarah Norfleet Nurney, was born November 28, 1866, in Suffolk and was educated at the Suffolk Collegiate Institute, at Norfolk College and at Miss Harris’ School at Staunton. She was the author of several short stories and of a novel entitled "Princess Mae." Just prior to her last illness, she had completed the rough draft of a history of Virginia. She had made a special study of the history of the City of Richmond "Guide Books," which were published continuously under her supervision from 1913 to 1940. Mrs. Kernodle had been for 26 years historian of the Richmond Chapter, U.D.C.; she was a charter member of the Ladies; Auxiliary of Richmond Post No. 1, American Legion; a member of the Richmond Light Infantry Blues’ Auxiliary; of the Association for the preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Confederate Memorial Literary Society, the Order of Eastern star, and many other civic and patriotic organizations. She also served as a member of the board of the Retreat for the Sick Hospital. She is survived by her son, John Thomas Kernodle, of Richmond. [Louise Wellons (NURNEY; Mrs. Peter J.)
