Joseph Lavine, aged 72, retired merchant, died this morning at his home after a long illness. Ill health forced his retirement two years ago, at which time he had been engaged in the mercantile business for 25 years. Mr. Lavine was a native of Russia and emigrated to this country at the age of 22. He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Kate Lavine; five daughters, Mrs. Max Terman, of Newport News; Mrs. Phil Friedenburg, Mrs. Irvine Yoffy, both of Richmond, Mrs. Philip Titelman, of Baltimore, and Mrs. Morriss Bass, of Suffolk; two sons, Abe and Norman Lavine, of Bedford, and three sisters, Mrs. Philip Goodman, Mrs. Nathan Luckman and Mrs. Philip Bernstein, of Baltimore. The body will be taken to Portsmouth Thursday morning at 11 o'clock for burial in the Hebrew cemetery. Friends have been requested by the family to omit flowers.
