Luke, eighty-nine years old, a former Confederate veteran, died to-day at his home in Myrtle, leaving a widow and three sons. ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK BRIEFS Suffolk, Va., July 19. - [...] The funeral of James W. Luke, an aged soldier of the Confederacy, took place at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the residence near Myrtle, Va. [...] James W. LUKE, farmer, Confederate veteran, b. Aug 1822*, Nansemond Co., d. 18 Jul 1911, at home, near Myrtle, interred in the LUKE family cemetery*, near Myrtle, 19 Jul 1911, "Richmond (VA) Times-Dispatch," No. 18,685, Wed., July 19, 1911, p. 2, clipping posted with Find a Grave Memorial #141802307, by Martha Fontaine Byrum [no grave photo]; "Virginian-Pilot" (Norfolk, VA), Vol. 40, No. 20, Thurs., July 20, 1911, p. 7 *Additional information: Site not known (Dec 2025) to the Southampton County Historical Society {SCHS} Cemetery Project. Find a Grave Cemetery ID #2567105 gives Joshua Ln. Find a Grave Memorial #141802197 gives d. 11 Jul 1911; it states he has a Confederate memorial stone - 1st SC Infantry, Co. I. He had served as a private in Riddick's Co., 59th VA Militia. He was on the pension roll in Nansemond Co. as a veteran of Co. I, 1st SC Infantry ("Virginian-Pilot," May 5, 1900, p. 8). He had applied 25 Apr 1900, age 78, and re-applied July 12, 1902, age 80, under the new Act. His widow applied for a pension 5 Apr 1912; the War Dept. found only the record of J.W. Luke, 1st South Carolina Infantry, Company L, Private, who died Oct. 18, 1862 in a Richmond hospital; Dr. James M. Gibson certified James died of the infirmities of age, with organic heart disease. The 1900 Census - Chuckatuck Dist., Nansemond Co. - gives b. Aug 1877, age 22, but m. 20 years.
