Wallace, 120 Wellons Street, was notified today that her son, Bernard Leville Lawrence, 45, had fallen off the tug "Columbia" and drowned in the Chesapeake Bay. Mrs. Wallace said that she had received no other details and that she didn't know when or just where the tragedy had occurred. Lawrence was employed by the Eastern Transportation Company. Lawrence, well-known in Suffolk as "Bernie," will be remembered for his many years of activity with Suffolk baseball teams in the late '20's and the early '30's. A popular performer, Lawrence in his prime was one of the most reliable catchers in local sandlot baseball. He played with such teams as who held their games in what is now known as Pender's Park, and the old Suffolk Athletic Club. Lawrence played his last baseball games with the Suffolk team which boasted such Tidewater standouts as Earl Dawson, Tommy Nee, Pat Doss, Paul (Cooky) Rose, Jimmy Duke, Hunter (Pop) Haynes, Tommy Mitchell, and many others. ****************************************************************************** Lawrence Remains Returned Here SUFFOLK, Feb. 22. - The remains of Bernard Lawrence, who was drowned in January when he fell from a tug on which he was employed near Baltimore, Maryland, will arrive in Suffolk Friday afternoon and be taken to the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home. He was the son of Mrs. W.E. Wallace, of Wellons Street. Services will be conducted at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery at 3:30 Sunday afternoon by Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church. ****************************************************************************** Lawrence Rites This [sic; Sun.] Afternoon SUFFOLK, Feb. 23. - Funeral services for Bernard Lawrence will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Last Rites Held For Bernard Lawrence SUFFOLK, Feb. 26. - Funeral services for Bernard Lawrence were conducted at 3:30 Sunday afternoon at the grave in Cedar Hill Cemetery by Dr. John G. Truitt, pastor of the Suffolk Christian Church. The pall was of white and lavender gladioli and Dr. Truitt read the poem, "Crossing The Bar." Active pallbearers were William Birdsong, B.O. Hill, H.M. Hayes, Robert Nelms, John R. Ellison, Carl Giddens, Marshall Andrews and John C. Parker.
