Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk. Mr. McClenny, who was in his seventy-fourth year, was the son of David McClenny and Median D. Wright McClenny, both natives of the Myrtle community. He was born and lived all his life in the house in which he died. His family came to the county in 1704 and he was related to many of the families around Western Branch Baptist Church. Though an orphan, Mr. McClenny made his way in the world, following the occupation of a farmer, the farm upon which he lived having been in the family for more than a century. His grandfather, John McClenny, was a soldier in the War of 1812. He was married in November, 1873, to Miss Ann Maria Holland, who preceded him to the grave by four years. He leaves four sons, Wilbur E. and Jesse D. McClenny of Suffolk; Sidney L. McClenny, of Myrtle, and Edward D. McClenny, of Marion, S.C. He also leaves two granddaughters, Miss Nellie D. McClenny, of Marion, S.C., and Miss McClenny, of Suffolk; a half brother, Jesse W. Copeland, of Lummis; one sister, Miss Mary C. McClenny, now past 80 years, who has made her home with him for many years; a half sister, Mrs. J.C. Byrd, of Holland, and several nieces and nephews. He had been a member of the Christian Church for more than 50 years, at first being a member of Holy Neck Church, in the county, and from there was transferred to Bethlehem Christian Church, near Suffolk, 46 years ago. He was elected collector and treasurer of that church, which office he held at the time of his death, having served for 46 years. He was elected a deacon of Bethlehem Church in 1885. While active, he was often a member of the Eastern Virginia Christian Conference, representing the church in that body and was a member of the Southern Christian Convention, which met in Graham, N.C., in 1888, when plans were matured for the building of Elon College. Each of his sons was educated there.
