McNeal Suffolk, Sept. 22. - Robert L. MeNeal, 60, widely known citizen of Nansemond County, died today, at the Marine Hospital, Norfolk. He was a native of Crittenden, son of the late George E. and Maria Joins [sic; Mariah Joynes] McNeal. Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Martha Custis Matthews, of Portsmouth; grandson, Claiborne Matthews; a sister, Mrs. A.B. Westcott, of Charleston, S.C. The body was taken to the Funeral Home of R.W. Baker & Co., and on Friday at 2:30 will be removed to Mount Zion Christian Church, Crittenden, where funeral services will be conducted Friday at 3:30 p.m. by the Rev. N.F. Hunt. Burial will be in the church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Crittenden Man Dies in Norfolk Robert L. McNeal, 60, Crittenden, Va., died today at the Marine Hospital in Norfolk. He was the son of George E. and Maria Joins [sic; Mariah Joynes] McNeal. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Martha Custis Mathews, two brothers, William H. McNeal, of Crittenden, and L.R. McNeal of Hobson, one sister, Mrs. A.B. Westcott of Charleston, S.C., and several nieces and nephews. The body will leave the R.W. Baker and Company Funeral home in Suffolk at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon for the Mount Zion Christian Church at Crittenden. The Reverend N.F. Hunt will conduct services at 3:30. Burial will be in the Church cemetery. ****************************************************************************** McNeal Funeral Held in Crittenden Funeral services for Robert L. McNeal were conducted yesterday afternoon at 3:30 at the Mount Zion Christian church in Crittenden by the Rev. N.F. Hunt. The choir sang "Nearer My God To Thee" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye." The organist was Mrs. G.W. Dickerson. The pall was covered with white carnations. Active pall bearers were J.R. Dixon, S.C. Bunkley, Pete Folgham [sic; Fulgham], Philmore Brown, C.E. D.Cert. 19072 (Norfolk #1681) also gives his mother as Maria JOINS. He served on M/V "Tom Benson" of Newport News. His wife Annie Mary (MURPHY NELMS) McNEAL (1889 - 1928) is buried with her first husband James Raleigh NELMS in Newman Memorial Cemetery, Oakland Christian Church, Chuckatuck. Their m.rec. gives McNEIL.
