MATHEWS [sic; MATTHEWS] TAKEN BY DEATH Wife of the Late W. J. Mathews Succumbs At Her Main Street Home This Morning After Long Illness; Funeral Tomorrow. Mrs. Annie M. Mathews, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther Bradshaw of Windsor, Va., and widow of W.J. Mathews, died at her home 425 N. Main Street, this morning at 8:30 o'clock after a long illness, aged 58 years. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Myra Vaughn [sic; Vaughan], of Suffolk, one sister, Mrs. M.L. Bowden, of Suffolk, and two brothers, L.U. Bradshaw, of Norfolk, and J.T. Bradshaw, of Windsor, Va., also several nieces and nephews. The body will be taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. M.L. Bowden, 135 Brewer avenue. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the grave in Cedar Hill cemetery, conducted by Rev. E.O. Deans of the West End Baptist Church. ****************************************************************************** FUNERALS MRS. ANNIE J. MATHEWS [sic; MATTHEWS] Funeral services for Mrs. Annie J. Mathews were held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the grave in Cedar Hill cemetery conducted by Rev. E.C. Dean and Rev. J. Sydney Cobb. A quartette composed of Mrs. Archie Smithers, Mrs. George Ballance, James Harrell and W.W. Ballard rendered the selection "Sometime We'll Understand." There were many handsome floral tributes, the casket was covered with a pall of lilies and pink rose buds. Active pallbearers were Ralph Turner, Ernest Bowden, Jasper Oliver, Lucian West, William Bradshaw, W.B. Harrell, Emmett King, and G.P. Scott. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family. ****************************************************************************** ANNIE M. BRADSHAW VAUGHAN MATTHEWS Suffolk, Oct. 21 - Mrs. Annie M. Matthews, formerly Miss Annie Bradshaw, widow of W.J. Matthews, died this morning at her home on North Main Street, after a long illness, aged 58 years. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther Bradshaw, of Windsor. Surviving her are a daughter by a former marriage, Miss Myra Vaughan; a sister, Mrs. M.L. Bowden; two brothers, L.W. Bradshaw, of Norfolk, and J.T. Bradshaw, of Windsor, and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the home of Mrs. Matthew's sister, Mrs. M.L. William Henry VAUGHAN, 2 Jul 1901, in Halifax Co., NC. (MB5:170) Her father Luther F. BRADSHAW (1840 - 1905) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. D, 16th VA Infantry. He was WIA twice near Petersburg. He was appointed Postmaster of Windsor Station 19 Jun 1889. He is buried in a BRADSHAW family cemetery on Old Suffolk Rd.
