A native of South Norfolk, he was the husband of Mrs. Edna Turner Matthews and a son of the late Elic D. and Mrs. Tussie Jernigan Matthews. He was a lineman for Virginia Electric & Power Co. 25 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Suffolk Masonic Lodge 30, and Mt. Nebo Royal Arch Chapter 20. Besides his wife, surviving are a son, William Earl Matthews of Chesapeake; three brothers, Melvin D. Matthews of Virginia Beach, Linwood Matthews of Grand Rapids, Mich., and J.P. Matthews of Nansemond; and a sister, Mrs. Dewitt Hobbs of Chesapeake. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home, Suffolk, by the Rev. K. Donald Berg. Burial, with Masonic rites, will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** Earl C.
