He was the son of the late Richard Henry and Mrs. Elizabeth Hudgins Matthews, of Nansemond County. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Annie Eure Matthews, of Eclipse; four sons, Roy H. Matthews, of Baltimore; Lloyd M. Matthews and Jesse Earle Matthews, both of Eclipse, and John Robert Matthews, of Richmond; a daughter, Mrs. W.C. Waymack, of Richmond; and one step-son, Christopher Pippin, of Smithfield; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, J.T. Mathews, of Crittenden; John T. Matthews, of Crittenden, and R.H. Matthews, of Norfolk, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Matthews was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle in Suffolk and was a retired oysterman. He was a native of Eclipse. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Christian Church by the Rev. D.H. Hardison, pastor of the Baptist Tabernacle, and Dr. I.Y. Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church from the R.W. Baker and Company Funeral Home an hour before services.
