He was a native of Isle of Wight, and spent his entire life in this county as a lumberman and farmer. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Josie Matthews; a son, Thomas David Matthews, Jr.; four nephews, Lloyd and Allen Beale, Alex Salmon and T.L. Salmon; two nieces, Mrs. Fletcher Roberts and Mrs. Staley Roberts, both of Norfolk. Funeral services were conducted at Oakland Christian Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and burial was made in the church cemetery. Rev. Dr. I.W. Johnson pastor was assisted by the Rev. Dr. N.G. Newman. Active pallbearers were J.W. Oliver, John Oliver, J.W. Horne, Barkley Richardson, Curtis Griffin and P.L. Eley. Friends of the family served as honorary pallbearers.
