A native of Suffolk, he was a bookkeeper for Perry Lumber Co. He was the husband of Mrs. Verlie Spivey Matthews and a son of George and Mrs. Ada Joyner Mattews. He was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and its Baraca Sunday School Class, Suffolk Masonic Lodge 30, Royal Arch Chapter 20, and Past Masters and Wardens Association. Besides his widow surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Ray Lowrimore of Virginia Beach and Mrs. William Mullen of Tunis, N.C. and a brother, Earl Matthews of Suffolk. A funeral service will be held today at 4 p.m. in I.O. Hill & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert E. Lee of Southside Baptist Church. Burial with Masonic rites will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
