Modlin, Of Smithfield, Loses His Father Robert Lee Modlin, 67, died at his home in Suffolk Monday [sic; Tuesday] afternoon. He was connected with the Norfolk & Western Railway for 42 years, having retired from active service in June of 1937. Prior to his connection with the Norfolk & Western, he was employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railway. He was a member of the Suffolk Presbyterian Church. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Mollie Oliver Modlin, the following sons and daughters of a previous marriage: Mrs. C.L. Blanchard, Mrs. James H. Bangley, Mrs. R.A. Baines, of Suffolk; Braxton Modlin, of Tarboro, N.C., and R.N. Modlin, of Smithfield; eight grandchildren; four brothers, William Modlin, of Lewistott, N.C.; Raymond Modlin, of Warrenton, N.C.; Herman Modlin of Cincinnati, Ohio; Euphrates Modlin of Ahoskie, N.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Stella White, of Colerain, N.C., and Mrs. Ursie Garris, of Edenton. N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the funeral home of I.O. Hill & Company, where funeral services will be conducted (today) Thursday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, with Dr. A.L. Franklin and Dr. H.J. Goodwin, officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. ****************************************************************************** FUNERAL HELD FOR R.L. MODLIN OF SUFFOLK THURSDAY Funeral services for Robert Lee Modlin, 72, who died at his home in Suffolk, January 12th, were held Thursday January 14 at the funeral home of I.O. Hill and Company by Dr. A.L. Franklin and Dr. H.J. Goodwin. A pall of red roses and white carnations was used. Active pallbearers were E.E. Jones, James C. Causey, Jr., Don C. Pinner, S.T. Godbey, William Birdsong, J.R. Vann, L.H. Byrd and R. Townie Piland. He was connected with the Norfolk & Western Railway for 42 years, having retired from active service in June of 1937.
