JOHN MINTON "We announce with deep regret the death of Col. John Minton of Nansemond Co., Va. in his 35th year. He departed this life on Wednesday the 31st at his residence in that county, after a wasting illness of long continuation. Col. Minton was universally beloved and deservedly esteemed by all whose acquaintance with him enabled them to discover the honorable and benevolent principles which regulated his life. And it may safely be said that whether considered as a citizen, neighbor, friend or master his conduct was alike, free from reproach, and his loss will be long and deeply deplored by the society of which he was a useful and valued member. He marched to the defense of Norfolk in the last war with England, holding the commission of ensign in the Nansemond Regiment of which he was afterwards appointed commandant and held the office to the time of his death. He was always a zealous, energetic officer and esteemed an unusually expert tactician. His amiability of character and warmth of personal friendship had their origin in his ardent and generous feelings which made him ever prompt to recognize with cordiality all whom he considered worthy of estimation."
