MOORE OF SUFFOLK DIES AT AGE OF 73 Suffolk - Oct. 6 - Mrs. Ethel Estes Moore, widely known Suffolk resident, died unexpectedly today about 6:30 a.m. while in a visit with her sister, Mrs. R.O. Harrell in South Boston. Mrs. Moore, 73, had been retired since 1953 after serving 27 years with the Health Department here as register of births and deaths and also as clerk in the health office. Through her official position, she became acquainted with thousands of persons in the Suffolk area. However, it was through her personal characteristics - frankness and a sense of humor - that she achieved recognition as a woman of charm and wit. Popular with all and sundry, she was noted locally as a raconteur, and many of her witticisms from many years back are still quoted today. QUEEN MOTHER Office associates in the Health Department and news reporters liked to refer to her as "Mother Superior" or "The Queen Mother." At the time of her retirement, she was the senior member of the Health Department staff and sometimes boasted ironically of having served under 15 different health directors. Mrs. Moore was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and its Randolph Society. She was a daughter of James and Alice Farmer Estes of Halifax County. She is survived by her husband, Edward Jefferson Moore; three daughters, Mrs. Henry Hardee Jr., of Norfolk; Mrs. James L. Bullock of Smithfield, and Mrs. William Agricola of Cradock; three sons, W.E.A. and Ira E. Moore of Suffolk and James H. Moore of Baltimore; two sisters, Mrs. S.R. Whitten of Roxboro, N.C. and Mrs. Harrell; and a brother, William Estes of South Boston. FUNERAL SERVICES Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:30 p.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, by the Rev. H. Walter Whichard, rector of St. Paul’s Church. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family said that flowers may be omitted and a contribution in lieu of a floral tribute sent to the Boys’ Home of Covington. Ethel Virginia (ESTES; Mrs. Edward J.)
