"Spike" Moore, 72, died this morning, Feb. 25 at the Jefferson Lodge Retirement Home in Charlottesville. A native on South Boston, he was a lifelong resident of Suffolk. Informed of Moore’s death, publisher T. Pat Cavanaugh said, "Truly, an institution in Suffolk has left us. He was Mr. Suffolk News-Herald. His passing will leave a void in all our lives here at the newspaper. We all feel his loss as will the entire community." "Spike was a man who loved the Suffolk News-Herald, the young athletes he encountered during his many years here and the city of Suffolk. Even though his death was expected, it is still a deep hurt." He had attended the College of William and Mary, and worked for the college newspaper. He came to Suffolk News-Herald in the 1940’s. Before his retirement in 1978, he had been managing editor and sports editor. Managing editor Jamie Brown said, "The athletes in the city, young and old, have lost a good friend. The city has lost a good friend. He touched so many lives in Suffolk for so many years, it is practically impossible to measure the loss." He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a past vestryman. Other affiliations include being an honor member of the City of Suffolk Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission, and a member of the Suffolk Tennis Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Jefferson Moore and Ethel Estes Moore; his sister, Alice Moore Bullock; and brother, William E.A. Moore.
